Historic & Character Homes
Older homes with distinctive architecture — and how to evaluate them beyond the listing photos.
Updated 2026-10-18
Character homes reward careful buyers. Original materials, porches, and proportions are part of the appeal; so are older systems and, sometimes, design review for exterior changes.
Questions to ask
- What is original, and what was replaced?
- Is it inside a local historic district?
- Has prior work been permitted?
What to check for any property
- Parcel, zoning, and any historic designation.
- Flood status for the parcel — not inferred from elevation or a nearby greenway.
- Age and condition of roof, foundation, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
- HOA documents, if any.
- Actual walking routes to transit, if transit matters to you.
