Biddleville's identity is inseparable from the institution at its center. The school founded in 1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute — later Biddle University, and since 1923 Johnson C. Smith University — gave the surrounding neighborhood its name. Biddleville grew into one of Charlotte's significant historic Black neighborhoods, home to faculty, students, families, churches, and businesses.

Why Biddleville's history is its own

Biddleville's history is not the same as Wesley Heights'. It developed under different circumstances, within a segregated city, and around a Black educational institution. Its story includes community-building, institutional leadership, and the effects of city policy and redevelopment on Black neighborhoods across Charlotte. We treat that history with the depth it deserves and only publish specifics we can source.

Verified resources

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission maintains survey reports on designated properties in and around the area, and Johnson C. Smith University publishes its own institutional history. These are the right starting points for anyone researching a specific house, church, or building.

Present-day community life

Today Biddleville is shaped by the university calendar, long-time residents and congregations, small businesses along Beatties Ford Road, and new housing. The Gold Line streetcar serves the Johnson C. Smith University area; check CATS for the current stop list.

Housing

Homes include older single-family houses, renovated properties, and newer townhomes and single-family construction. If a home is described as historic, ask whether that refers to its age, a formal designation, or marketing language.

Property-specific due diligence

  • Look up the parcel in Mecklenburg County Polaris to confirm the legal address, zoning, and any overlay.
  • Check whether the parcel is inside a local historic district or carries landmark or National Register status — these are separate designations.
  • Review FEMA and county floodplain maps for the parcel itself; proximity to a creek or greenway is not a flood determination.
  • Confirm school assignment directly with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools; assignments can change.
  • Measure the actual walking route to any streetcar stop or bus stop you plan to use, including crossings.
